Caving in Cappadocia

By Pat Levy Over the last couple of years Turkey has had a pretty bad press. On the border of  a devastating war zone,  damaged by political upheaval and terror attacks, trying  to accommodate thousands of refugees , its tourist industry is taking heavy body blows. Which is a terrible shame for those in Turkey whose livelihoods depend on tourism and for all travellers who enjoy new experiences. I spent a week in Cappadocia in central Turkey and experienced nothing...

Book Review: The Illustrated History of Football Hall of Fame

As I am a kale eating, energy conserving, Trump loathing, Corbyn loving, Lily Allen listening, hug a tree, kiss a bee, spray paint on a bedsheet and wave it at the march activist - no animals harmed in the making of products and does no one think of the children? - of course I read the Guardian. It’s sort of the daily Bible for people who are dubious about actual Bibles.  But here’s a nasty little secret that would bring...

Film Review: GOOD TIME

We have all at one point or other seen our well made plans go awry but I’m sure they do not compare with the one at the centre of Good Time. Set in Queens, New York, the film opens with Nick Nikas (Ben Safdie) having a learning disability test. Before it can be completed his brother Connie (Robert Pattinson) bursts into the examiner’s office and takes Nick with him. It turns out that Connie has more important plans and the...

GWR WiFi fault promotes accessing pornographic and offensive content on board their trains

A WiFi fault on Great Western Railway seems to promote accessing pornographic and offensive content on board their trains. The page lists a number of pages you are able to access using their free WiFi, including sending and receiving emails and browsing website content. But one user was left particularly shocked when the tick and cross functions didn't work on her browser - which added video streaming, pornographic material and offensive content to the things you are "able to do". GWR...

Seven bags full of cannabis found dumped at the side of the road

Surprised police officers couldn't believe their luck when seven bulging bin bags full of cannabis were found dumped at the side of the road. The drugs were found by council officers on the A59 near Harrogate, North Yorks., early on Sunday morning. PC Amanda Hanusch-Moore from North Yorkshire police tweeted the pictures and said: "Lost something? "This was found in black bin bags last night on the A59 near Blubberhouses. If it's yours come and speak to us at Harrogate...

Restaurant Review: Pied a Terre

Scientific research suggests sound (music, in particular) can enhance the ways in which we perceive flavour. High-frequency sounds can enhance sweetness in food, while lower ones can accentuate bitterness. As a result, Pied a Terre – one of London’s longest-running Michelin-starred restaurants – believes music played in restaurants could be manipulated to replace unnecessary ingredients (sugar, fats, etc.), or could essentially contribute to devastating your experience. Experimenting with this theory, the restaurant is currently collaborating with BBC Manchester DJ Karen...

New home buyers and gas safety checks revealed

Buying a house is a huge investment - but two in three people don’t know if they’re purchasing a potential death trap. New research by CORGI HomePlan has uncovered a lack of safety checks being carried out by home buyers. With £1.2m property transactions taking place in the UK each year, they claim this means 800,000 homes are at risk of a life-threatening gas incident, such as a carbon monoxide leak, or expensive repairs to boilers, fires, radiators and cookers....

Just about managing families being discriminated against by punitive and unfair tax system

Families that are "just about managing" are being discriminated against by punitive and unfair tax system, new research has suggested. The Chancellor is being urged to end the discriminatory tax regime that penalises families when compared to the other OECD countries after new research being launched tomorrow in Parliament by the social policy charity Care lays bare the alarming truth about family taxation in the UK. The report, ‘The Taxation of Families – International Comparisons 2016’, reveals that the tax burden faced by one-earner married couples with...
