Specsavers were quick to capitalise on the mistake, telling the CNN anchor he "should've gone to Glasgow".
"It is not 'contentious', it is wrong. Incorrect. A deliberately bad translation designed to whip up anti-French feeling, anti-EU feeling too," wrote one Twitter user.
"Hid in a fridge from Good Morning Britain," wrote James Felton.
The new name for Facebook sounds like the Hebrew word for "dead".
The plans come in response to the Serota Review, which said the BBC needed "improved transparency and openness".
"Everyone should talk about politics, whatever their day job," one person said.
"Oo check it out, my concrete plants have shot up over the summer! Trick is: plenty of sunlight, not too much water."
