Theatre Review: Around the World in 80 Days, Union Theatre

Southwark’s quaint and quirky Union Theatre plays host to Phil Willmott and Annemarie Lewis-Thomas’ musical adaptation of Jules Verne’s classic novel Around the World in 80 Days this August, with up-beat, slapstic, musical drama on display at a riveting tempo. Produced by Sasha Regan (all Male Iolanthe; HMS Pinafore and Blondel) and directed by Brendan Matthew (Guy – the musical, My Land’s Shore and The Hired Man), this fun and fanciful musical will see audience members whisked away on a...

PLAYLIST: Best of AUGUST 2018

Cast your eyes back through the release calendar for 2018, and there really hasn’t been a duff 7-day stretch since the beginning of the year. July’s been a mixed bag – as you’ll see from the exceptionally eclectic playlist this month – with a blend of summertime tropical house, acerbic punk and full-on, experimental metal darkness. Is Childish Gambino’s ‘Summertime Magic’ as politically compelling as last month’s ‘This Is America’? No. Is his Summer Pack single set-up an irresistible slice...

Last month, to coincide with the anniversary of the Battle of the...

Disused office buildings turned into incredible works of art

A sculptor famous for his surreal public art installations has unveiled his latest creation - a disused office building that is covered in zips. British artist Alex Chinneck, renowned for creating the illusion that the facade of an abandoned house had slipped down, put the finishing touches on his creation last night. Huge zippers have been installed on the front and back of the building, in Ashford, Kent, giving the impression the building can be completely opened up. Brundett House...

Book Review: Pimple, by Ryan Weeks

Ryan Weeks’ Pimple (out now on Amazon UK), takes a satirical swipe at Generation Y’s insatiable hunger for new apps. Set in the edgy world of London’s sex industry, it’s a darkly-witty tale about an Uber-style app for the sex trade called ‘Pimple’, and a cautionary one about the impact of ‘disruptive technology’ on society. The theme may sound raunchy, but this is no sleazy read. The author avoids dwelling on bedroom details or bloody depictions of violence. Instead, he...
