Campaigners highlighted the team's diversity after fans booed players taking the knee in Middlesbrough on Wednesday night.
The 23-year-old said he had received “at least 70 racial slurs” in the wake of United’s penalty shootout loss to Villarreal on Wednesday night.
The three men were each accused of two counts of doing acts tending and intended to pervert the course of justice.
"Ed came back to the clubs to say they had got the green light from No 10," a source said.
“There's such a community feel about this level, the players are basically your mates. During a game the other week our centre-back came past and asked if I was coming to the pub afterwards.”
The gesture prompted predictable calls to "keep politics out of sport" from some corners.
"He is said to have refused to test how much alcohol he had drunk on Christmas Eve at the station's custody suite."
Recent days have seen a number of members of various franchises test positive for Covid-19.
