The Labour Party is tearing itself apart. Jeremy Corbyn's lukewarm support of the Remain campaign is just the excuse many Labour MP s have been waiting for. Corbyn's overwhelming surprise victory in Labour's leadership election upset moderate and right-leaning Labour members. Though Corbyn did his best to satisfy his parliamentary party detractors by appointing them to his shadow cabinet, he was never going to win them over. His years on Labour's fringes meant mainstream politicians would never make it into...
“Everybody loves to laugh don’t we? We all love to laugh,” Mrs Merton said to a young Steve Coogan on the iconic talk show sofa. Like Jim Royle, Barbs and the plethora of other television characters she dreamt up, Caroline Aherne was always well placed to preach. But her sad passing has left a huge gap when we’re all most in need of a giggle. Laughing has always been a big part of working class communities, but it’s not a...
Shakespeare and Quentin Tarantino will unite in a modern adaption of Macbeth. The timeless, blood-soaked tale of murder, lust and power is to get a modern movie makeover as filming takes place in Birmingham on a reworking of the tragic play that plays homage to some of director Quentin Tarantino’s best-loved films. ‘Macbeth – Kill Bill Shakespeare’ is an imaginative take on one of the world’s most famous plays, with the production staying true to the original text. However, the images...
The train operator of one of the busiest rail networks in Britain is set to axe 350 services a day. The RMT was shown the amended timetable in a meeting with parent firm Govia Thameslink (GTR), which owns Southern Rail. GTR said its amended timetable would be a temporary measure until staffing returned to normal. Union general secretary Mick Cash told the BBC: "This latest savage attack on passenger services by GTR is nothing to do with staff sickness and everything to do...
Britain started the process of detaching itself from continental Europe following news that George Osborne plans to slash corporation tax to 15 per cent. The chancellor unveiled a five-point plan to protect the UK economy in the wake of the referendum vote, announcing that we are to remain competitive as an island by becoming more offshore in nature. Osborne says he also wants to secure new investment from China, boost banking lending, attract investment into the North of England and maintain...
By Bea Patel, TLE Property Editor and Director of Shop for an Agent On Thursday 23 June 2016 Britain faced its biggest decision for decades. We took to the polls to vote if Britain should leave or remain in the EU. Pre-EU referendum, we saw much uncertainty in the property market, with many people approaching a ‘wait and see’ attitude to buying and selling. Experts predicted house prices could fall up to 18 per cent. Forecasts in sterling weakening opened...
Review by Leslie Byron Pitt/@Afrofilmviewer Son of Saul is the type of movie that has to be seen when the viewer in the right state of mind. Least they find themselves equally as trapped within the films tight compositions, as the titular Saul. A Jewish–Hungarian prisoner held within the confines of Nazi extermination camp Auschwitz, Saul Ausländer (Géza Röhrig) works at the camp as one of the infamous Sonderkommando. He aids Jews into the gas chambers, fed on lies of...
By Jonathan Hatchman, Food Editor, @TLE_Food Since opening on Greenwich Peninsular last year, perched between North Greenwich tube station and The O2 Arena, Craft London has become incredibly popular. Although Stevie Parle’s food is the main draw, from the venue split over three floors – the top-floor bar is also impressive, offering stunning views of The O2 Arena, the Isle of Dogs, and the river. Another prominent nearby building, however, is the Tate and Lyle Sugar Refiners, pierces the skyline...
Sport News 24/7 By David de Winter - Sports Editor @davidjdewinter @TLE_Sport Calamitous. Shambloic. A disgraceful result that will impact on generations to come. Far too much play on the right wing and not enough on the left. But, enough about my thoughts on the EU referendum. England’s footballers rather predictably missed the opportunity to give the public something to cheer about after the most tumultuous political week in my lifetime, by bowing out of Euro 2016 with a pathetic...
