Government defeated again as Commons “wrestles power from No10”

The government has been defeated in the House of Commons for the second time in as many days after MPs voted 308 to 297 in favour of forcing Theresa May to reveal her plan B in the event that she loses the meaningful vote. Yesterday the Prime Minister suffered a humiliating defeat as 20 of her own MPs voted against the government over an amendment to the finance bill that will curb some of the government’s tax administration powers in the...

Exposed: Far right attempts to hijack Brexit debate threaten to turn violent

HOPE not hate has been exposing the coordinated attempt by far-right activists to hijack the Brexit debate to spread hate and division.   MPs such as Anna Soubry and journalists such as Kay Burley from Sky News as well as Guardian columnist Owen Jones have been targeted for harassment, intimidation and abuse by a hardcore element of far-right ‘yellow vest’ protesters outside Parliament, frequently using terms such as ‘traitor’ (echoing language used by Jo Cox’s killer Thomas Mair). Based on messages shared...

Third of Brits won’t leave UK this year due to Brexit uncertainty

New research has revealed a third (36%) of Brits will opt for staycations over foreign travel in 2019 as a result of the uncertainty caused by Brexit.   The findings have discovered that almost half (47%) of Brits believe Brexit will make trips abroad more difficult for UK travellers and the majority (56%) think holidays will become more expensive. Indeed, the average couple expects to spend almost £1,000 to holiday abroad this year, compared to just £574.10 if they were...

14 MPs turn up to discuss UN report on 14 million people living in poverty

The UN’s report on poverty in Britain is at risk of being swept under the carpet after just 14 MPs turned up to debate the issue in parliament yesterday. A festive hangover appeared to have swept over the House of Commons as politicians returned from their holiday break. Only a handful of MPs bothered to turn up to an adjournment debate on the findings of the United Nations Report on Extreme Poverty and Human Rights in the UK and Northern Ireland,...

Government can’t even organise a Brexit traffic jam

This morning 100-150 lorries were supposed to turn up to a disused airport to stage a huge fake traffic jam. The idea was to see how we would cope during a No-deal Brexit scenario and the expected travel (and other) chaos. Unfortunately only around 90 vehicles turned up to the airstrip, at the old Manston airport, in Kent. The convoy of lorries then set off at just after 8am from the disused airfield, on a 20-mile route to the Port...

Theresa May refuses another people’s vote but refuses to rule out MPs voting repeatedly to clinch her Brexit deal

Prime Minister Theresa May again ruled out going back to the people to give them final say over the UK's future relationship with the EU, insisting that giving the people another vote would be “disrespecting the vote of the people." -Yet the Prime Minister seemed prepared for the House of Commons to vote on her deal more than once if that is what it takes to get her deal through. - While all the while she runs the clock down...

Carluccio’s to pay ‘Settled Status’ for EU staff in memory of Antonio

Carluccio's has announced it will pay 'Settled Status' for EU staff in memory of its founder Antonio, who made the journey from Europe to London to set up the established chain. EU citizens wishing to stay in the UK after 30 June 2021 will have to apply to the government in order to have an indefinite right to remain. Applications will cost £65 for adults and £32.50 for under-16s, a charge that was dubbed "unacceptable" by Nicola Sturgeon. The Scottish government was...

Pre-Brexit hit as house price growth slowest since 2013

The Nationwide building society has reported that compared with a year earlier there was a house price rise of only 0.5 per cent in December, the lowest level since February 2013. The lender believes that uncertainty over the economic outlook is hampering confidence in the housing market. London and surrounding areas saw a small fall in house prices in 2018. The average house price in the UK in December 2018 was £212,281 compared to £211,156 in December 2017. Northern Ireland...
