Fare dodger fined £1,000 for 12-minute train journey

A 12-minute train journey cost a rail passenger more than £1,000 after he refused to pay the fare - of just £5.60. Ben Warrington, 20, didn't have a ticket when he went on the 6.7 mile trip from Narborough to Leicester city centre on November 7 last year. A court heard he refused to pay the fare of just over a fiver and gave a false name and address when he was quizzed by a ticket inspector. Warrington, of Littlethorpe,...

ReMAYners: Putting the “General” in General Election

It can be quite unsettling as a Yorkshireman to be more perturbed by our political landscape than about the price of beer or the weather conditions, but with the divorce from our biggest trading partner officially underway and a snap election on the horizon to cement said proceedings my contempt for drizzly conditions and ludicrously priced flat lager have officially been demoted. After two terms of crippling austerity cuts, the dismantling of the welfare state and a referendum that was used...

Review: Sunday Lunch at The Brookmill, Deptford

By Maggie Majstrova, @foodstrova For weeks now, on my way to and from one of my client’s offices, I’ve been passing The Brookmill – its windows shuttered, its façade hidden by scaffolding. These are the unmistakable signs of refurbishment that fill me with equal measures of excitement and dread. How will it turn out? Will it be somewhere fabulous, or somewhere utterly horrendous? Before Christmas, The Brookmill finally re-opened, premiering the final result. It's a 19th Century Victorian corner pub,...

Fire service to become first to hire on-call staff that don’t fight fires

A fire service could become the first to hire on-call staff - that DON'T fight fires. Oxfordshire's new chief fire officer, Simon Furlong, says fire stations could employ staff who will not respond to blazes. He said the 'community safety advocates' could carry out social care home visits, help with NHS patient transport and promote safety campaigns. He stressed the proposal was at a 'very early' stage but said it could be part of wider changes to broaden the role...

Can you tell what this mesmerising image is of?

This mesmerising image looks like toy tractors playing on a fabric field - but is actually a team of farmers hard at work. Photographer Chris Taylor, 47, spotted the workers in a field in East Winch, Norfolk, on Tuesday while taking aerial snaps from the sky with his drone. As they planted potatoes, they etched perfectly straight lines in the soil which look flawless from the air. Commenting on the eye-catching effect, Chris said: "Looks like tiny tractors making corduroy!"
