New £2 million project to help London’s unpaid carers in work & education

Carers Trust, the UK’s largest charity for unpaid carers, is today launching a £2 million project to help unpaid carers in London to access work, training and education. Working for Carers will encourage local employers to adopt carer-friendly policies and to recognise the benefits of employing carers in their workforce. The new programme will help some of the capital’s 689,000 unpaid carers to return to work or education whilst juggling care for a family member or friend who is sick...

Bonavita’s stainless steel lined coffee brewer is a thing of simple beauty

Of all the coffee commercials to grace our screens this year McDonald's poke at hipster cafe culture was the one that really hit the nail on the head. Coffee has become so complicated of late. If you like your matcha lattes with soy milk or your non-fat frappuccinos with extra whipped cream and chocolate sauce then you're well catered for, but those who prefer a straight-forward good quality mug of black coffee are becoming increasingly marginalised. As I wrote here, coffee has fallen victim...

Spruce Springclean tops poll of “best business names in Britain”

Spruce Springclean, a carpet cleaning shop in Cornwall, has been named the best business name in Britain, according to a new survey. It was followed by the rib-tickling Surelock Homes, a Portsmouth-based locksmith, and the Planet of the Grapes – a wine bar in London. Four in 10 Brits say that a witty or memorable business name is likely to make them use that company over a similar one. And one in 10 say they can remember funny company names...

Song To Song: Film Review

Terrence Malick has seemingly become so committed to his own self-aggrandising brand of philosophically indulgent, freeform filmmaking that one could arguably be justified in calling him the Michael Bay of arthouse auteurism. Granted, it’s impossible not to be intrigued by the output of a director who’s driven solely by his own artistic vision, but contrary to popular belief, Malick is not some sort of celestial, cinematic being: his earlier works – Badlands and The Thin Red Lines – may have...

Pilot captures stunning footage of Boeing 787 contrails

A pilot has captured stunning footage of the contrails of a Boeing 787 Dreamliner over eastern Russia. Contrails are line-shaped clouds produced by aircraft engine exhaust, typically at aircraft cruise altitudes several miles above the Earth's surface. They are composed primarily of water, in the form of ice crystals. Lou Boyer was piloting a Boeing 747 flight from Tokyo to Alaska when he saw the contrails over eastern Russia. The Dreamliner was flying towards Asia when Boyer spotted it passing...

£176 billion Nestle could keep Blue Riband in UK for £1 million

New research has revealed £176 billion company Nestle could keep production of the Blue Riband in the UK for just £1 million. Nestle announced it was going to move production of the iconic chocolate biscuit to Poland in April. Some 300 jobs in Yorkshire, the North East and Scotland are jeopardy despite the biscuit been primarily consumed by the UK market – meaning it will have to be exported BACK into this country if production moves to Eastern Europe. GMB is...

The sick man of Britain: The NHS turns 69

In 1853 in the run up to the Crimean War John Russell quoted Nicholas I of Russia as describing the Ottoman Empire as "the sick man of Europe". Over the years the term has been applied to most failing states within the continent and as 2016 ticked around it was Britain's turn to inherit the mantle. Following the Brexit vote and on the back of a crumbling economy, chaotic political landscape, eroding global influence and domestic social conflict most continental commentators agreed that...
