London Zoo on lockdown after fire broke out next to the Meerkats

London Zoo is on lockdown after a huge blaze ripped through the cafe - next to the beloved meerkats. A team of 70 fire fighters and ten engines spent two hours tackling the blaze after a 999 call was made at 6.08am. The flames were near the children's petting zoo and meerkat enclosure but Zoo officials refused to say if any animals had been hurt. Flashing blue lights of fire trucks could been seen inside the zoo as at least...

Why we should all be talking about: Hampton and Richmond Borough

Sky Sports subscribers this month have once again been afforded the opportunity to catch up with the trails and tribulations of the Class of ’92 and their non-league outfit Salford City FC. The North-West team have had the eyes of the nation on them over the past few years as they have been transformed from a lowly, semi-professional club into full-time table-toppers. But as remarkable as their accomplishments are, a similar tale has escaped the gaze of the nation in...

Why I Watch The Apartment Every Christmas

For all the joy and frivolity of the festive period, film has always had a tendency to show the darker side of the holiday. From Dead of Night and Mon Oncle Antoine, to the mournful Meet Me in St. Louis and emotionally raw It’s a Wonderful Life, Christmas at the cinema can be pretty bleak. The Apartment may not be full of snow, reindeer, and Father Christmas, but like many other Christmas films it looks at the loneliness that can...

Tories’ sneaky Xmas present to nation – £100 rise on our council tax bills

UK councils are on a “cliff edge” as vital services face another 54% cut while council tax rises add £100 to our bills from April. This week the Government was slammed for sneakily passing the buck to councils to try to plug the massive gap in the finances needed to provide essential services and urgent need for housing. You may have missed the largely under-reported new Local Government Settlement announced by Local Government Secretary Sajid Javid. But you will likely...

Forgotten Film Friday: Shallow Grave (1994)

Christmas is the season of giving, when people come together and rejoice in each other’s company. So, what better way to spend your pre-Christmas Friday than in the company of three loathsome characters, whose sense of cheer comes at the expense of others and to watch them slowly descend into a black hole of greed, selfishness and murder? This week’s Forgotten Film Friday marks the immaculate conception of a very different, more cinematic Holy Trinity, that of Danny Boyle and...

Hotel review: The Address, Dublin

Part of the established North Star Hotel, known to Dubliners as the only decent hotel in the area (sorry, other hotels in the area), the newly-refurbished wing of the hotel has been given its own brand, its own reception desk, and a rooftop residents’ lounge of its own too. But is The Address worth the extra attention? We jumped on their bed and raided their minifridge to find out. The lobby  The area Directly opposite Connolly Station, Dublin’s train link...

WIN: Frank Carter & the Rattlesnakes Brixton Show Setlist

The final show on the Frank Carter & the Rattlesnakes Modern Ruin tour run at the O2 Brixton was an absolute barnstormer. We should know, we were there to grab some snaps on behalf of Sailor Jerry and we can tell you - total carnage. If you were there - congrats, you probably witnessed one of the best live shows of 2017, right? TLE have been lucky enough to come into possession of Franks' personal setlist from the night, which is both...

Swan song: How Britain uses the last of its fading European influence

By Robert Seiler On the face of it, Theresa May’s Brexit strategy has been reduced to accepting unilateral concessions (otherwise known as “sufficient progress”) in Brussels along with political defeats (otherwise known as “parliamentary sovereignty”) to her own party in the Commons. Beyond the headlines, the Prime Minister is also presiding over the slow but steady decline of British influence within the halls of European institutions. In some instances, that loss of sway is swift and sudden: Britain’s failure to...
