The High Court found that policies in March and early April 2020 were unlawful because they failed to take into account the risk to elderly and vulnerable residents from non-symptomatic transmission of the virus.
More than 20,000 elderly or disabled care home residents died from Covid-19 in England and Wales during the first wave of the pandemic.
The High Court has ruled that the government broke the law by failing to protect more than 20,000 elderly or disabled care home residents.
Policies to discharge patients from hospitals to care homes at the start of the pandemic were "unlawful", the High Court ruled.
