Sir Charles Walker, deputy of the 1922 committee of Conservative backbenchers, said it was becoming increasingly difficult for MPs to defend the government - as policies can be quickly dropped by ministers.
“We have the highest rate of excess deaths in all of Europe, we also have the deepest recession in all of Europe, and I think people are looking at that and are clearly very, very worried about that, thinking ‘is there an alternative?’.”
During the height of Covid crisis she appeared to say she could blame scientists for the huge number of Covid-19 care home deaths.
The former business minister took 63.5 per cent of the vote.
Labour accused Johnson of trying to shirk responsibility for a “shambles” caused by the “incompetence” of his government.
“It is brazen of the Prime Minister to idly shrug away a disaster that his own Government created."
