Wine & Spirits Education Trust Launch Immersive ‘From Still To Bar’ Experiences

As the largest global provider of qualifications in the fields of wines and spirits, the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) have teamed up with three of London’s top bars this year to offer a series of immersive ‘From Still to Bar’ experiences. Each focusing on a different spirit, June saw Chef Mark Hix’s Mark’s Bar taking part, with a focus on rum, while The London EDITION’s Punch Room will host WSET’s gin experience for the rest of this month....

Pub changes its name to Pubby McPubface

Just when you thought the national obsession with almost calling a scientific vessel “Boaty McBoatface” has subsided, a public house has brought the subject back into our national psyche. I'm guilty of all this as well, I call my new bed "Beddy McBedface," I am not immune to it. Unlike the boat, which even though most people voted for it, which wasn’t eventually given the name, this pub has changed to Pubby McPubface, and the locals love it Peter Daniels,...

Brixton Beach Boulevard – Review

A little bit of Miami in 1982 has arrived in Brixton, and will be with us until the end of August. The rooftop summer pop-up is the place to be the feel part of the Florida scene, in SW2. The venue has funky cocktails, retro film screenings, food stalls and live sports. There is even real sand, you lucky people. If you have a white tuxedo, bring it, if it rains, wear it anyway. The summer is still here and...

Bar Review – Hutong

Four years have passed since the Shard was completed, and I’m still unable to understand why visits to the 72nd floor viewing gallery are so popular. Given the choice, why would anybody choose to pay £25.95 for the pleasure? Especially when that particular cost could, instead, buy a round of drinks (almost) within one of the restaurant bars? The restaurants are perched just half-way up the tower, yet the views are almost equally impressive – especially when seated window-side, with...

Bar Review – Big Easy Bar.B.Q & Lobstershack, Canary Wharf

By Jonathan Hatchman, Food Editor, @TLE_Food Although now better known as a graveyard for abandoned shopping trolleys, and for its water the colour of stout-soaked military uniforms – the River Thames was, once upon a time, the beating heart of our fair city. In the 18th century, for instance (before England had become an international laughing-stock) the river was the main source of London’s trade, with West India Docks acting as one of the globe’s busiest ports. And while the...

The iconic Old Street Roundabout bar will be throwing a raging five day celebration - from Monday 13th June until Friday 17th- across all of their seven sites, culminating in an epic party at Shoreditch Grind, where it all began. All week long, the Grind’s infamous Espresso Martini will be £5 at every Grind, while Shoreditch Grind will be serving up their pizzas for...

Rooftop Bars? I’m Staying Grounded

By Jonathan Hatchman, Food Editor, @TLE_Food Am I really the only person who thinks it’s possible to make it through the summer without drinking upon somebody else’s roof? Last weekend was the hottest of the year, so it’s not too surprising to find that just about every media outlet in the world has chosen to roundup a list of the best rooftop drinking spaces to visit across the next couple of months. The problem, however, is less with the concept...

Bar Review – The White Lyan

By Jonathan Hatchman, Food Editor, @TLE_Food Located within a Hoxton backstreet away from the main drag, acclaimed bartenders Ryan Chetiyawardana and Iain Griffiths opened The White Lyan a couple of years ago, reinstalling life into an old East London pub. At present, the drinking scene in London is remarkable, especially in the east, yet as is the case with most anything, although already spoilt for choice, the city’s most discerning drinkers are constantly searching for new dens to frequent, bars that...

Bar Review – Oriole

By Jonathan Hatchman, Food Editor, @TLE_Food Having first opened in 2010, taking over a relatively secluded space close to East London’s famous Old Street Roundabout, Nightjar has been included within the World’s 50 Best Bars Awards top ten for the past four years, and is currently ranked as the third best bar across the whole globe. So with the rising demand, it’s unsurprising that the founders opened a huge new 120-cover space at the tail end of last year, taking...
