The case is putting pressure on the Home Office to provide answers after labelling those convicted of the offence as “people smugglers” and claiming small boat crossings were illegal.
Officials have also criticised UK plans to push back boats and allow British patrols on their beaches.
“Same old fake news, this time in the front page of a respected paper, The Times," Albania's foreign minister said.
"Whenever I think that I’ve now seen it all when it comes to the Home Office, there is a new low. This one is particularly low though," Tweeted Prof Tanja Bueltmann.
The Home Office refused to say how much it had spent operating the controversial asylum centre.
