Reactions: Outrage at ‘expensive’ and ‘complicated’ new travel rules

"Someone’s mates are making money!"

Online users have expressed “complete outrage” against the UK government’s new travel measures.

The rules involve compulsory private Covid tests costing hundreds of pounds upon people’s UK arrival, with people prohibited from getting tests through the NHS.

But many reported the ‘day two’ and ‘day eight’ do not arrive at their homes, and that they are being refused refunds whilst being quarantined for 14 instead of 10 days, through no fault of their own.

Matthew Hitchcock said he hadn’t seen his family since February 2020. “Now, if I need to come it’ll cost £400 extra for those tests even after giving a negative test on arrival,” he said.

Carol McCudden slammed “Tory corruption”: “It’s disgusting. Someone’s mates are making money! I think it’s to discourage people leaving UK for holidays. France is offering free PCR tests for tourists – keeping people safe is their priority… get a grip, UK!”

Anne Bolitho said: “I have just been working out what I need to do on returning from France – if we get there this summer. It’s so complicated and so expensive too. Someone is making a lot of money out of these tests.”

This is a steal by the Government and these private services! I will not have the test done and if they refuse me entrance then we shall see who wins it in court! https://t.co/nqbSXAqS8n

@alexsobel @FabianLeedsNE @hilarybennmp @RachelReevesMP EU citizens who are UK residents are being fleeced by the #private #testing system when visiting their elderly parents, incl me. Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run by a handful of billionaires, most of whom reside overseas and all of them have strong political allegiances and financial motivations.

Our mission is to hold the powerful to account. It is vital that free media is allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, wrongdoing and abuse of power. But we can't do it without you.
