MPs vote through social care reforms – but government majority gets slashed
The prime minister’s working majority of around 80 MPs was slashed to 26, with the former justice secretary urging ministers to "look again" at the issue.

When it was launched, Priti Patel said “this is exactly what our new point-based immigration system was designed for – attracting the best and brightest based on the skills and talent they have."
In the speech, which reduced some delegates to tears, he said: "We must never, ever let the NHS free from our grasp. Because if we do, your future will be my past."
"The migrant crisis is out of control, and the prime minister doesn't seem to care," he said, adding that he is definitely not a racist.
“Frankly Johnson appears to be delusional," Manuel Cortes said.
"You lost your notes, you lost your place, you went off on a tangent about Peppa Pig; frankly, is everything OK?"
"I almost cried when you guys left. I just thought it was so bad for Britain’s interests, and frankly the liberal democratic order’s interests across the world.”
Conservative pledge, 2019: "We have one red line" when it comes to social care: "We will protect the family home."
"I come from a country where people have to fundraise on the internet just to stay alive. That's barbaric."
