By Pat Levy There’s an allure to Greece that can’t be found anywhere else. But put aside the sun-kissed islands, beautiful as they are, in favour of relatively undiscovered places on the mainland and accessible via modern, uncongested highways which make our overcrowded motorways look so last century. The place is the Peloponnese and the more precise spot is Costa Navarino, the realisation of a dream of a local fisherman turned shipping magnate who spent his later years buying up...
Martha Daub, a 59-year-old grandmother from Northern Tanzania, is campaigning to end Female Genital Mutilation (FGM), a harmful cultural practise that involves the partial or total removal of the external female genitalia for non-medical reasons. Martha is well placed to talk about FGM, having been cut at the age of 14 in preparation for her early marriage, and later working as ‘cutter’ performing FGM on many girls in her community. Sunday, October 15th is International Day of Rural Women and...
This fascinating image of a tiny insect living under a massive mushroom has won an amateur photographer a major photography award. Duncan McNaught, 54, picked up the Royal Society of Biology photography award after snapping the unusual picture. The image -- titled Welcome to My Humble Abode -- shows a tiny toadstool, no bigger than the size of a small teacup, with a small bug inside. Duncan, who lives in Glenlee, Dumfries and Galloway, ventures to the forests near his...
Many of us, including myself, have visited tribal villages while on holiday to an African country. It is a fairly normal activity and the kind of display that opens I Am Not a Witch. So called witches are penned within a primitive Zambian settlement and are tied to ribbons to prevent them from leaving, while a guide tells tourists about their customs and beliefs. Elsewhere a young girl called Shula (Maggie Mulubwa) is blamed for suspicious activity and is accused...
This image shows how Hurricane Ophelia transformed a popular tourist beach into a white wonderland - by turning the sea into FOAM. Coastal areas in Cornwall are already feeling the effects of the strong winds with high tide yet to come. Penzance was the first to feel the storm's power as Ophelia made landfall in Britain this morning as high winds whipped up the sea by the habour. And these images and footage from photographer Sally Adams show the scene...

Almost 4,000 women have posted "me too" on Twitter in response to Alyssa Milano's tweet encouraging women to step forward. Milano is an American actress who is famous for her activism, and recently posted a hard-hitting response to the Harvey Weinstein scandal in which she admitted to being "happy - ecstatic even - that it has opened up a dialogue around the...
New research by The Renewal Trust and Nottingham Trent University has helped to reveal the human cost of modern working practices like zero hours contracts, with the poorest communities often bearing the brunt of the impact. Now, the Renewal Trust is calling for an urgent local response to the issue, as CEO Cherry Underwood explains: “There’s been a lot of talk in the media about modern working practices, following the publication of the Taylor Report. Nationally, the falling levels of...
