"He’s doing an excellent job on the things that matter," the foreign secretary insisted.

Liz Truss has claimed Boris Johson’s future is “assured” when asked if the prime minister should resign.

BBC presenter Sophie Raworth asked the Foreign Secretary if Johnson should resign if he has lied to Parliament.

“If you know what the ministerial code is, should he resign if he misled Parliament?,” Raworth asked.

Truss replied by avoiding a straightforward answer and listing the two key problems she thinks Johnson is busy with.

She said: “I’m not gonna answer hypothetical questions.

“The future of the prime minister is assured.

“He’s doing an excellent job on the things that matter, recovering the economy from Covid, getting Brexit done, getting this country going again.”

Empty chair gets TV attention as Liz Truss fails to attend interview

This week, Good Morning Britain filmed an empty chair after Liz Truss failed to attend an interview whilst tensions are rising over the Partygate scandal.

Presenter Adil Ray told viewers that no government minister booked to appear on the show on Wednesday.

It comes after Downing Street admitted government staff gathered at No 10 during the first Covid lockdown to celebrate Boris Johnson’s birthday, according to the BBC.

“As often happens, when there’s a big news story around for the government, when they got their backs to the wall and they need to answer questions, they disappear,” Ray said.

He added: “So we are hearing that we may well not get a government minister this morning, despite being a national breakfast show that has a predominantly Midlands and North-based audience.

“The fact that ministers are ignoring a big section of the UK this morning I think is very telling but we do have the cake.”

Host Susanna Reid interjected in a scandal-themed manner: “We got some cake to make up for it.”

“Maybe they’d like to come in, you know, we got some cake,” Ray agreed.

Met Police will finally investigate Partygate claims

Meanwhile, the Metropolitan Police finally confirmed this week that it will investigate claims of Downing Street parties during lockdown restrictions.

Police chief Cressida Dick said there will be an investigation into a “number of events” held in No 10 and across Whitehall during Covid restrictions, The Mirror reported.

The move follows information provided by senior civil servant Sue Gray’s inquiry team.

According to Cressida Dick, the investigation is only launched now because No 10 parties have reached the ‘threshold’.

The threshold includes evidence that those involved knew or ought to know that what they were doing was an offence, the fact that not investigating the parties would undermine the legitimacy of the law, and that there is little ambiguity around the absence of any reasonable defence.

She insisted that the Met “police without fear or favour” when challenged about why Scotland Yard has failed to investigate the government parties to date.
