Diane Abbott has said the newly-appointed Sajid Javid cannot form another human shield for Theresa May as suspicions rise that Amber Rudd became a fall guy for failures that took place under her role as Home Secretary.
The Labour Shadow Home Secretary said the change that was brought about by Rudd’s resignation last night will mean nothing unless May’s “hostile environment” policy is brought to an end.
She said: “The new home Secretary cannot form another human shield for Theresa May.
“The Prime Minister sill has serious questions to answer about how this scandal was allowed to happen, and whether she knew Amber Rudd was misleading Parliament and the public last week.
“It’s time Theresa May finally takes responsibility for the crisis she created”.
Abbott’s words echo that of Liberal Democrat home affairs spokesman Sir Ed Davey, who said it was clear that Amber Rudd has ended up being the fall guy to protect the Prime Minister.
Davey also called for May to face questions now given these dreadful failures largely took place under her watch as Home Secretary.
Javid yesterday said his family could have easily been caught up in the Windrush scandal.
The family of the Communities Secretary emigrated from Pakistan in the 1960s, said that his family could have easily been caught up in the situation.
Talking The Sunday Telegraph, he said: “I thought that could be my mum… my dad… my uncle… it could be me.
“I was really concerned when I first started hearing and reading about some of the issues.
“It immediately impacted me. I’m a second-generation migrant.
“My parents came to this country from Pakistan, just like the Windrush generation.”
