Guardian slammed for calling Carrie Johnson UK’s ‘first lady’

An article in The Guaridan has got a lot of people hotter under the collar, than they already were, due to the heatwave.

The piece has been published as the G7 group of nations are meeting in the Cornish seaside resort of Carbis Bay in June for what will be the 47th summit.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is hosting the event, and newly-wed Carrie Johnson will be in attendance.

The heads of government of the member states, along with the representatives of the European Union, meet at the G7 summit.

US President Joe Biden, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will be meeting in Cornwall.

Also in attendance will be President of the European Council Charles Michel and President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.

Other representatives from non-member countries include Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison, South Korean President Moon Jae-in, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

First Lady

As the summit kicks off Caroline Davies writes: “Newly wed and with her new married name, Carrie Johnson takes on her first challenge as the UK’s first lady when she hosts the partners of world leaders at next week’s G7 summit.”

She continues: “Past G7 and G20 summits invariably show the political spouses at play, visiting art galleries, sampling delicious wines, dining at showcase restaurants and suchlike. The message seems to be that the weighty business of solving the world’s problems is conducted by their predominantly male partners locked in roundtable discussions, while the wives’ role is to “bolster” relationships.”

And on she goes…”So the pressure will be on Carrie. Devising a programme in a pandemic is one challenge, where air-kissing will be replaced by fist pumps and elbow bumps and masks may be the main fashion statement of the day.”

Reactions

Not everyone was keen on the ‘first lady’ reference and made their feelings clear on social media.

1.

She is not “UK First Lady”. I am disgusted with the ⁦@guardian⁩ for using this description of Johnson’s latest wife. https://t.co/O9PxZWDyAD

Yes I'm talking about YOU @guardian.
Thought we could at least rely on YOU to not buy in to this distracting pretence & whitwashing of who this woman actually IS.

This isn't journalism. It's capitulation.https://t.co/b9cJutIywH

Of course not everyone was enraged by the piece.

This has got the left in meltdown. The Guardian describing Carrie as the First Lady at the G7 summit.

Good luck to her & especially Boris. I know they will represent the U.K. well.
