Porterhouse Brewing Co. Hersbrucker Pilsner

In celebration of their 21st anniversary, The Porterhouse Brewing Company began to supply their range of craft beers throughout the United Kingdom earlier this year. Initially opening Ireland’s first brewpub, The Porterhouse Brewing Company was launched by cousins Liam LeHart and Oliver Hughes, spotting an opportunity to compete against the bland beers being produced by mass-producing breweries at the time. Since then, the brewery has developed a four-strong core range, while The Porterhouse in Temple Bar still serves just the brewery’s draft craft beer brewed on site.

“A classic full lagered sharp Pilsner”, Porterhouse’s Hersbrucker is brewed with Lager Malt and Cara Malt, plus a hop variety of Galena, Nugget and Hersbrucker. From the Hersbruck district in Hallertau, Germany, Hersbrucker hops are similar to the noble hop varieties, with a low co-humulone level. As such, the hops are a definitive aroma variety – world renowned and sought after, generally used in the finishing process on German Bavarian-style lagers and pilsners. When poured, Porterhouse’s Hersbrucker Pilsner is golden with a fair white head and plenty of visible effervescence. On the nose, grassy hop aromas are initially prominent, joined by notes of orange, bread and toasted grain. Back notes comprise some very subtle whiffs of tobacco, honey and peach.

On the palate, grassy notes are again first to prevail, present alongside conspicuous doughy bread savours. A commendable balance between refreshing hop bitterness and sweet malt is also noticeable, complete with some spiciness, grain, herbal notes and a floral bitterness that continues on to the beer’s finish – becoming subtler, whilst lingering. Though not the most dynamic pilsner on the market, Hersbrucker is quaffable and moreish. As the brewery website insists, this is a “mouthful of flavours as far from insipid cooking lager you can get.”
