Nutfield Priory is a four star country house hotel and spa in Redhill inspired by the Neo-Gothic splendour of the Palace of Westminster, which dates back to 1872. The 60 bed building oozes traditional grandeur.

Half an hour from central London, but it feels a million miles away. The hotel itself is situated at the end of a long tree lined driveway.
It is four miles from Reigate and the M25 and two miles from Redhill railway station, where trains reach London Victoria in 30 minutes. I took the train and got a taxi (£5-6) from station which was a very short drive. There are ample car parking facilities at the front and rear of the building.
The grand hall features beautiful stained-glass windows with family coats of arms, it feels like you have stepped back in time and you are lord of the manor. There is a cosy library is filled with memorabilia – a red leather porter’s chair, removable wooden panels used to store guns when the building was commandeered during during World War Two.

Mega-sized suites, named after famous writers, are as majestic as their surroundings. The view out of our window looked out over the rolling hills and you feel like writing your own novel. The bed was huge and the lines sheets crisp and sumptuous. When my head finally hit the pillow later that evening I was out like a light.
The bathroom was as big as some rooms in city centre hotels and the bath was luxurious. All 60 rooms come with bathrobes and safe.

Room service (including turndown) was brisk and an order for a sandwich was delivered within 15 minutes.
There is an impressive Elemis spa and health club, in a separate building, features a decent-sized pool with adult-only swimming times, whirlpool, squash court, fitness studios, gym and calming relaxation room.
I took an express half hour back and shoulder massage, which soothed my tired muscles, and helped me relax into my stay.
Food and drink 4/5
The two-AA-Rosette Cloisters restaurant dishes some delightful food. A tasty amuse bouche and a well presented three course meal, with generous portions was served. The wine choice by the sommelier was a perfect accompaniment for the meal, and a cheeky glass of champagne before the meal always goes down well.
Breakfast includes fresh orange juice and fruit, and eggs cooked every way, with a fantastic continental breakfast offering.
Insider tip
It was hot in the dining area, so don’t wear a jumper.
