‘Completely unrealistic’ to call for end of Brexit protocol, Irish FM says
Ireland’s foreign affairs minister has said any attempt to undermine the Northern Ireland Protocol poses “real difficulties”.
The UK is the first and so far only country to have left the EU and Brexit was and is the withdrawal of the United Kingdom (UK) from the European Union (EU) and the European Atomic Energy Community (EAEC or Euratom). The official withdrawal was at 23:00 31 January 2020 GMT (00:00 CET).
Ireland’s foreign affairs minister has said any attempt to undermine the Northern Ireland Protocol poses “real difficulties”.
“It’s a monumentally stupid situation for a country supposed to be standing on its own two feet and exporting round the world.”
The UK's manufacturing sector has been battered by Brexit and coronavirus.
The Netherlands British Chamber of Commerce said they have been working “night and day” on inquiries from UK companies in recent weeks.
The UK has shot itself in the foot by leaving the EU without trade deals with China and the US.
The move to impinge on the protocol had blindsided both the UK and Ireland and was condemned by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Some companies in South Yorkshire and Derbyshire have already lost customers following Britain’s formal severing of ties with Brussels earlier this month.
