36 professional footballers are facing prosecution for being pat of an alleged match fixing scandal.

The activity is said to have taken place in La Liga and officials are pressing for the maximum punishment is found guilty.

They could then be facing four-years in jail, rather than the two year term that the state were pushing for.

One of the players caught up in the scandal is Ander Herrera, the Manchester United star. The game they are looking into is the May 2011 match between Herrera’s old side Real Zaragoza and Levante. Deportivo La Coruna, was relegated as a result of Zaragoza’s 2-1 away win.

Herrera was signed for in 2014 from Athletic Bilbao for 36 million Euros, and was named the club’s player of the year in 2016/17 season. He began his career at Real Zaragoza, before joining Athletic Bilbao in 2011

The other footballers facing trial along with the Manchester United star include Atletico Madrid star Gabi, former Middlesborough striker Cristhian Stuani and Javi Venta, who ended his playing days in West London at Brentford.

Zaragoza’s then-manager Javier Aguirre and ex-owner Agapito Iglesias are also being prosecuted.
