UK is a “complainants’ society”, says biggest complainer in British politics

Oh the irony...

Nigel Farage has said the UK is a “complainants’ society” as he complained about the questions and investigations into his and his party’s funding.

Speaking to the BBC following his return to Parliament as the MP for Clacton and ahead of Reform UK’s party conference this week, Farage moaned about a “whole ecosystem” in politics not wanting “new kids on the block succeeding.”

Despite his best efforts with a performative and ultimately time-wasting by-election, questions remain over Farage’s funding.

There is an ongoing parliamentary investigation into whether, when he was elected as an MP in 2024, he should have publicly declared a £5m sum he received from a crypto billionaire.

Farage maintains he did nothing wrong in not declaring the money and said he expected it “won’t be too long” before he is interviewed as part of the investigation.

He argues the money was a personal gift and did not therefore require registration under the rules.

But he claimed the investigation was proof that the UK is a “complainants’ society.”

“If you complain about me, automatically that triggers an investigation,” Farage said.

"If you complain about me, automatically that triggers an investigation"

Of course, the irony is that Nigel Farage might the biggest complainer in British politics. All he and Reform do is complain about the state of the nation, rarely offering any solutions or answers to the problems they talk about.

Farage forged a political career by complaining about the European Union. But, despite getting his wish in 2016, his complaining hasn’t stopped.

The Clacton MP complains about immigration. He complains about benefits and the welfare system. He complains about being scrutinised. He complains about net zero. He even complains about Brexit.

If the UK is a complainants’ society, then Farage has reaped the rewards like no one else.

He is the poster boy of complaining.
