Force Majeure – Film Review

By Stephen Mayne @finalreel What happens when you discover you’re not who you’re meant to be? In that fine Scandinavian tradition, Force Majeure ruthlessly picks apart familial relationships by teasing out a thread and pulling until everything unravels. That it’s done against a beautifully rendered postcard setting and with a wicked streak of dark humour is all to director/writer Ruben Östlund’s credit. The cinema of our northern European friends is particularly good at finding emotional weak points and exploiting them...

Rugby League: High Intensity, Highly Enjoyable

Sport News 24/7 By Rob McHugh  @mchughr  @TLE_Sport This week sees four of the Super League's established power houses go toe to toe on what promises to be a season defining weekend in the First Utility Super League.  On Thursday night, the Wigan Warriors play host to the Warrington Wolves in what has routinely been a top of the table clash in recent years.  Both teams have struggled for form and consistency in the early rounds but are beginning to...

Introducing: Hot Under Collar

By Julia Prigmore (@JuliaPrigmore) Albeit fresh on the music scene and therefore with a slightly limited back catalogue, a skillful fusion of soul, rock, funk and hip-hop gives North London newcomers Hot Under Collar an already accomplished and distinctive sound that’s caught our attention. Having formed in 2012, the aspiring quartet are united by a mutual love of music and performing, and after a number of triumphant gigs; they’ve already conquered some of London’s most popular venues such as Camden’s...

10 Crazy Coalition Governments you may end up voting for.

By James Emslie We're off. Another scramble to be Britain's most powerful man. This time round, we are faced with quite a choice, largely because we haven't got one. A power sharing deal between the Conservatives and UKIP? An 11th hour Lib/Lab covenant? Labour buoyed up by Alex and his band of Scottish Nationals with help from what remains of Cleggmania? The potential combinations, mergers and alliances is all MP's, pollsters and theorists can think about these days. Cabinet ministers,...

Review of Debtonator by Andrew McNally, published by Elliot & Thompson

By Rob Foster Concerns about inequality have become a key theme in public discourse in the years following the economic recession, from the Occupy movement’s narrative of the 1% versus the rest, to “rockstar economist” Thomas Piketty’s “Capital” capturing the attention (positive and negative) of the political classes in 2014. Even the recent leaders’ debate made passing mention of the growing divide between the rich and the rest, although the focus on apprenticeships and the property ladder as means of...

Family-Friendly Events and Festivals – Summer 2015

By Jasmine Stephens, Family Editor If there’s one thing I remember like clockwork at 9am on the first Monday of every single school break, it’s that I need to get much better at planning our holiday activities in advance and not rely on googling ‘Help me!’ to find things to occupy our time. There is a huge range of family-friendly festivals and events all across the country this summer; some free, some requiring tickets, some in a city centre and...

What Is Dividend Stripping

By Nathan Lee, TLE Correspondent  Dividends have been, and always will be, an important component to the average investment strategy. The typical dividend strategy is rather basic (but effective) - purchase a well-reputed, long-term income stock, one that has a history of paying regular dividends. But, that's far from the only dividend strategy available. There is a dividend strategy called dividend stripping that takes the typical long-term strategy and flips it on its head. In this article, we will be...

A Green Spring Clean

By Jasmine Stephens, Family Editor Like most parents, particularly cynical and sarcastic stay-at-home ones, I absolutely adore cleaning. I spend hours every day debating whether I prefer the postprandial wiping ceremony (encompassing hands, faces, table, floor, chairs, walls…) or the fragrant delight that is scrubbing the bathroom of a household with three children under the age of seven. Oh, the joys of getting my exercise by chasing the kids around the house with the vacuum cleaner as Cheerios are flung...

New airline watchdog given greater powers

Frustrated fliers will have a new source of redress, as the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) have announced plans for a new aviation ombudsman with greater powers to keep airlines in check. Passengers who seek compensation for delays, lost luggage and mistreatment will be able to call upon the watchdog to mediate complaints through a “simple, efficient and effective” process, at low or no upfront cost. The CAA, who previously handled disputes, announced that the new ombudsman will have more power...
