A new report has found vacancies in the NHS could reach 250,000 by the end of the next decade.

NHS workers across all occupations are being driven out by excessive workload, low pay and even the threat of violence, GMB Union has claimed.

The current NHS staffing shortfall of 100,000 could reach a 250,000 by the end of the next decade, according to new briefing published by The King’s Fund, the Health Foundation and the Nuffield Trust.

Rehana Azam, GMB National Secretary, said: “This shocking report should be a wake-up call.

“NHS workers across all occupations are being driven out by excessive workload, low pay and rising demand caused by cuts to social care.

“If the number of vacancies is allowed to double as projected then patients will be placed at real risk of harm.

“Ministers must do the right thing and give the NHS and social care the investment the sector so urgently needs.”

Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run by a handful of billionaires, most of whom reside overseas and all of them have strong political allegiances and financial motivations.

Our mission is to hold the powerful to account. It is vital that free media is allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, wrongdoing and abuse of power. But we can't do it without you.
