New coins celebrating the 70th wedding anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II and The Duke of Edinburgh are to be released next month.

The longest royal marriage in British history reaches the milestone on November 20 – their platinum anniversary.

In 2017 the nation celebrates with Her Majesty The Queen and His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh as the royal couple mark 70 years of marriage.

The collection of special edition coins depict the Queen and Prince Philip riding beside one another on horseback with both their side portraits together.

John Bergdahl, artist and sculptor, has created the horseback portrait to capture the royal couple’s mutual passion for all things equestrian.

Etienne Millner, a fellow of the Royal British Society of Sculptors, created the combined portrait of Prince Philip supporting The Queen in his role of royal consort to represent a sense of duty.

They married at Westminster Abbey in 1947 in front of 2,000 guests and the service was broadcast live to 200 million radio listeners.

The Queen saved ration tokens to buy the material for her dress and she did her own make-up on the big day.
