A driver had a miraculous survival after he dozed off at the wheel and was impaled with a 2.5 foot rod which went straight through his chest.

Night shift worker Piyush Sundarva, 26, was driving home at 7.30am on the SG Highway in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, when he swerved into a metal road divider.

The bars smashed through the car window and pierced Mr Sundarva’s chest, coming out the other side beneath his armpit.

Despite his horror injuries, Mr Sundarva was able to scream for help and an ambulance was soon at the scene.

A team of doctors removed a 2.5-feet-long rod from a 26-year-old man’s chest at Shalby Muti Specialty Hospital in Ahmedabad city of the western Indian state of Gujarat.

Passersby rushed to help and sliced the metal rod to separate it from the road divider.

The blood-soaked crash victim was taken to Shalby Muti Specialty Hospital in Ahmedabad where he went under the knife for 2.5 hours.

Consultant Dr. Bhavin Desai removed the rod and debris from the crash from the patient’s chest.

He also lost two fingers and suffered nine broken ribs, and his liver was damaged.

Deputy general manager of Shalby Hospital, Avdhut Kothari, said: “Piyush was saved only because of the people who separated the rod from the divider.

“His liver was partly damaged due to the overall shock of the accident. But he will be fine after treatment. We will allow the fractured bones to heal on their own”.
