Strength: 4.6% ABV

Brewed: Birkby, Huddersfield

Heavily inspired by the American craft beer scene, alongside a passion for great beers, Magic Rock Brewing Co. commenced brewing in 2011. Since initiating, the brewery has become renowned as one of Yorkshire’s finest craft brewers, “committed to making a full range of modern, flavourful, hop forward and ‘big’ beers using the best available ingredients and techniques for drinkers unwilling to compromise on flavour.” And to accommodate increases in demand, Magic Rock eventually moved to a brand new site last year, now operating from Birkby in Huddersfield. As a result of the move, the brewing capacity has been increased massively, and the first run of cans have been launched, allowing consumers to enjoy the brewery’s core range at home.

From the seven-strong core range of beers, ‘Rapture’ is the Magic Rock’s red hop ale, brewed with six different hops and five different malts. A full-bodied beer, prominent aromas of resinous pine, grapefruit and red berries are joined by a strong malt sweetness with plenty of caramel, plus subtle back notes of spice. On the palate, the pine and red berries continue, alongside hints of papaya. There’s also a prominent biscuit malt character, which stands strong against the bitterness of the new world hop blend, continuing into a bold, dry and bitter finish. What’s most impressive, however, is the balance of flavours, plus an incredible depth of flavour which is surprising considering the beer’s relatively low alcohol by volume.
