Easter is here and like other religious festivals it gives us chance to enjoy a few days off, overeat and, crucially, think hard about wine pairing.
With spring on the horizon it is a wonderful time of year to embrace the rich and diverse colours and tastes of the season, tapping in to the variable flora and fauna transported to our table courtesy of the lamb meats we consume.
Although there is a temptation, especially given the gloomier weather forecast, to buy a more full-bodied wine, Easter should be all about the dark fruits and fresh, springy flavours, so err towards the pinot noirs, carmeneres and Beaujolais.
Our pick is a 2016 Pinot Noir from Marlborough in New Zealand.
Thanks to their prime location on the northeastern tip of the South Island, winemaker Haysley MacDonald is lucky enough to have the perfect conditions to make spring time wine.
There’s fresh, ripe cherries and raspberries on the nose, with just a little spice, and smooth, warming and juicy on the palate.
It’s an excellent match for roasted poultry, game or leaner cuts of lamb.
