Strain on the budget of the Metropolitan Police was recognised by the London Assembly today – as Members formally supported the Met’s application to the Home Office for one-off financial support.
Due to the recent unprecedented events in the capital, the Assembly agreed the Chair should write to the Home Secretary to highlight the need for the special grant.
Joanne McCartney AM, who proposed the amended motion, said: “In recent months we have seen some horrific scenes in our city. Our thoughts and support rightly remain with those who have been affected by the terror attacks and the fire at Grenfell Tower.
Today we heard about the extra strain these unprecedented events have placed on the Metropolitan Police’s budget. That is why I am pleased the Assembly have unanimously agreed to support the Met’s application to the Home Office for an exceptional payment of additional financial support to cover these extra costs.”

“This Assembly notes that, given the huge financial strain recent unprecedented events in London have placed on the Metropolitan Police’s budget described by the Deputy Commissioner Craig Mackey and the Mayor Sadiq Khan, supports the Metropolitan Police’s application to the Home Office to the Special Grant Programme for one-off financial support at this time.
This Assembly therefore asks the Chair of the Assembly to write to the Home Secretary to underline Members’ support for this additional financial support. “
