Shadow home secretary Yvette Cooper pointed to record figures for small boat crossings, saying ‘people are not waiting, they are arriving’.
"On July 4th, Britain has a chance to wash itself clean of 14 miserable years of Conservative rule, and it’s a chance it simply must take."
Critics described the move as "shocking", saying it "stinks of a cover up".
