Polling released in the aftermath of the local election bloodbath gives the Tories an 11 point lead over Labour.
The Green party was gaining support from Labour voters who felt disillusioned with the “authoritarian Blairism” of Keir Starmer.
The election is “a free hit” for the Tories and a chance “to give Labour another kicking”.
The Labour leader has denied trying to make deputy Angela Rayner the scapegoat for the party’s defeat in Hartlepool.
"You can't sack an elected deputy leader," she reminded Sir Keir.
"Sacking Nick Brown, one of the most experienced and tactically astute chief whips the party has ever had, is inept in the extreme," John McDonnell said.
“Our politics are better when women are at the top table," she said after becoming elected as the first ever metro mayor in the country.
