A man is dead after police ‘surround car and shoot into it’ near Bristol.

Armed police swooped on the car on the M5 motorway and “shot the driver ten times” through the passenger window, at around 9.30 this morning.

The injured man was then pulled from the old red car by officers who began attempting to resuscitate him just off the M5 near Portishead, North Somerset.

Onlookers said two police cars pinned in the red Corsa, before officers approached, backed off and then closed back in while two officers fired shots.

Avon and Somerset police said: “We can confirm a man died earlier this morning in an incident involving police firearms on the Portbury Hundred (A369) in Portishead.

“We have referred the incident to the Independent Police Complaints Commission. This has been a fast-moving incident and is now under investigation by the IPCC.”

Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run by a handful of billionaires, most of whom reside overseas and all of them have strong political allegiances and financial motivations.

Our mission is to hold the powerful to account. It is vital that free media is allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, wrongdoing and abuse of power. But we can't do it without you.
