A brilliant clip of Sir Patrick Stewart talking about being a lifelong socialist has gone viral online in the wake of the legendary actor’s death.

On Thursday, it was announced that Stewart had passed away at the age of 86 after “a brief and poignant journey” with Alzheimer’s disease and Lewy Body Dementia.

Tributes have poured in from across the world of acting and entertainment for the British actor, best known for his roles in Star Trek and X-Men and an acclaimed theatre career.

Many others have paid tribute to Sir Patrick for his political and social views. During his life he spoke regularly about his upbringing, during which his trade unionist father instilled the “fundamental issues of Labour” into him.

Stewart had said his politics were rooted in fairness and equality, and he spoke out on a number of issues, such as the Iraq War, Brexit and Donald Trump’s presidency.

Patrick Stewart on Trump (2017): “You might say to me, well, you’re not an American, what has it got to do with you? The fact is when America sneezes, the world catches a cold. After his death, one particular clip has been widely shared online of Stewart discussing his politics and what it was like to be a socialist living in America.

Speaking to Pete Buttigieg during an appearance on US television, Stewart recalled his “first act of civil disobedience” at the age of five when Clement Attlee beat Winston Churchill in the 1945 general election.

He continued: “I have been a left-wing man ever since.
