Robert De Niro described Donald Trump as a “f*cking idiot” and “Jerkoff-in-chief” during a profane rant at last night’s National Board of Review gala.

The actor, who was introducing Meryl Streep, used The Post to cast parallels on today’s political scene, saying Trump has “put the press under siege” by trying to “discredit it through outrageous attacks and lies”.

He said: “Again, just like 1971, the press is distinguishing itself with brave, exacting journalism.”

Donald Trump has faced a media frenzy over the release of Fire and Fury, which contained several explosive revelations about the President.

One revelation was that he didn’t expect to win the election and that he has unrequited crushes on Vladimir Putin and Rupert Murdoch, allegations that he has since denied.

Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run by a handful of billionaires, most of whom reside overseas and all of them have strong political allegiances and financial motivations.

Our mission is to hold the powerful to account. It is vital that free media is allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, wrongdoing and abuse of power. But we can't do it without you.
