A unique collaboration between The Beak, Tap East and Borough Market, Love Borough Chocolate and Coffee Porter launches this month, with profits going towards the Borough Market trader support fund – aiming to help ease the financial losses suffered following this year’s terrorist attack. A beer with true London terroir, the Porter was brewed with English Fuggles hops grown in the heart of the market, flavoured with coffee and chocolate from two of the market’s best-known suppliers. St Lucian chocolate from Rabot 1745 is used, alongside Peruvian coffee beans from the Old Spike roastery in Peckham, which also operates the Change Please coffee cart in Borough Market. Moreover, the brewing process also used six varieties of malt, and has a high ABV (7.2 per-cent) in keeping with traditional 18th Century Porter enjoyed throughout the city.

On pour, Love Borough Chocolate and Coffee Porter is jet-black and topped with a foaming tan head. On the nose, notes of dark chocolate and coffee are unsurprisingly the most prominent, joined by further aromas of sweet vanilla, toasted malts, licquorice, molasses and some smoke. Notes of licquorice and molasses continue on the palate, alongside a potent, rich character from each dark chocolate and coffee, plus undertones of mint, leather, oak and lingering smoke. With low levels of bitterness imparted from the hop variety used, Love Borough Chocolate and Coffee Porter has an intense fruity finish with some prolonged acidity. Rich, complex and fruity – this is a remarkable beer for an even better cause.

Bottles of Love Borough Chocolate and Coffee Porter will be on sale in the market, and from cask at the Globe Tavern and The Rake. Further information can be found here.
