Joy Philippou, a half-Spanish-half-Russian doctor of philosophy, moved to the town five years ago and uses rap as a way of engaging those at risk of becoming embroiled in crime.

See National story NNCOUNCIL; A charity bigwig sacked after describing Prince George as the face of "white privilege" was hung out to dry for her republican beliefs, a tribunal heard. Leftie Angela Gibbins was mocked by colleagues at the British Council, whose patron is the Queen, for being a "quiet Corbynista" and "the red under the bed", it was claimed. She refused to meet Prince Charles when he toured their office, turned down the opportunity to go to the Queen's garden party and stayed at work whilst colleagues went to Margaret Thatcher's funeral parade, the tribunal was told. The 53-year-old caused outrage after her Facebook comments on a picture of Prince George went viral last July. Ms Gibbins, who earned £80,000 a year in her highflying role as head of global estates at the taxpayer-funded British Council, was sacked the following month.

Green-fingered locals had worked "tirelessly" to spruce up Melksham, Wilts., by planting flower beds, weeding borders and cleaning parks. But they were furious when contractors felled the landmark trees in Market Place the day before the town was judged by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). Wiltshire Council has apologised for the timing of the tree works but volunteers fear the judges will penalise the town because of its ugly central square. Kathy Iles, who co-ordinates activities for South West in Bloom Melksham, was reduced to tears when she saw the jagged stumps.

The neglected animal weighed 11kg when he was found, instead of the 18kg which is normal for a dog of his size. Chesterfield Magistrates' Court heard the dog was given a low body score of one out of nine and that he was so emaciated that he had no muscles in his legs. RSPCA inspector Rachel Leafe said: "When I took Maxie to the vet he was so weak.

The thug and his accomplice Jerome Jones, 26, had broken into the pensioner's home on December 19. They kept the terrified lady trapped in her own bedroom while on searched other rooms for valuables and the other pilfered cash from her purse. The vile pair escaped with the victim's jewellery - including a signet ring, watch and bracelet belonging to her late husband - and Jones attempted to sell the stolen valuables at a jewellery shop the next day, but was turned away.
