Based in Bristol, Lost and Grounded Brewers began brewing in the summer of 2016, following a year of preparation. Fascinated by the precision of German brewing and the idiosyncratic nature of Belgain beers, Lost and Grounded have a 25HL brewhouse from Krones, located in Freising, Germany – home of Weihenstephan. Here, the brewhouse includes a traditional lactic acid propagation plant, giving brewers the ability to naturally produce “sour” wort with a special strain of lactic acid bacteria used to naturally adjust the beers’ PH throughout the brewing process. This traditional German brewing method also gives Lost and Grounded added flexibility when fine tuning their range of beers.

From the brewery’s seven-strong range, ‘Running with Sceptres’ is a ‘Special Lager Beer’, unfiltered and bottled with an eye-catching label designed by illustrator Alexia Tucker. Brewed with four malts, Running with Sceptres has an interesting hop structure. American Chinook and Mosaic hops lend an India Pale Ale slant to the beer, combined with Australian Ella hops and clean, bittering Magnum hops from Germany. On pour, the light amber liquid is topped with a foaming white head and plenty of mineral carbonation. On the nose, aromas of pine, orange juice, lemon and grapefruit rind are somewhat expected from the American hops, complete with some straw, light malt and additional grass notes.

When sipped, Running With Sceptres is initially dry with firm bitterness which develops further on the palate with some juicy fruit notes of peach and orange. This develops even further with some sweet-spiciness, harbouring back notes of pine, grainy barley and some final herbal notes which transpire before a dry, bitter finish takes over. With some protruding pilsner and India Pale Ale characteristics, Lost and Grounded’s Running With Spectres is a special lager, indeed.

Further information on Lost and Grounded can be found here.
