The role of First Secretary of State is likely to be banished to the history books after Damian Green was forced to resign over porn allegations.

Following the sacking Theresa May has been left in charge of appointing her second in command, but the odds suggest she could well abolish the ministerial portfolio entirely.

Betway have slashed the price on the position being abandoned to 6/4 following Green’s disgraced encounter.

As it is simply an honorific title with no specific powers or authority, the PM isn’t under any immediate pressure to appoint a new First Secretary.

Amber Rudd is 7/4 to be given the job if she does decide to fill the position.

Betway’s Alan Alger, said: “As one door closes, another usually opens, but odds of 6/4 for the position of First Secretary of State to be scrapped suggest that may not be the case.

“Theresa May will weigh up her options over the Christmas period and Amber Rudd will likely be at the forefront of her thinking for the role. The current Home Secretary leads the race at 7/4 over Michael Gove at 11/4.”
