Arron Banks has said he regrets “unleashing the demons” of Brexit on the country in a controversial interview with Andrew Marr this morning.
The businessman, who bankrolled the Leave.EU campaign and is currently under investigation by the UK’s National Crime Agency, said that if he had his time again it would probably have been better to remain in the European Union and not unleash the demons of Brexit.
It comes as Prime Minister Theresa May faces pressure over claims she blocked security services from investigating Leave.EU and Ukip backer Arron Banks in the run-up to the referendum.
The campaign is now subject to an investigation over the origins of its finances, although with a deal on Britain’s divorce from the EU thought to be imminent it could be too little, too late.
BBC political editor Andrew Marr faced criticism over giving Banks air time on his show today.
Andrew Adonis, a leading remain campaigner, said in a letter to the BBC that Banks’s expected appearance was the result of “a very serious editorial misjudgment, influenced by a culture of accommodation to extreme Brexiteers now deeply embedded within the BBC”.
