Quick thinking police officers helped deliver a baby girl after a woman gave birth in the street.

Heavily pregnant Weihong Yu called emergency services when she went into labour in north London last night (SUN).

An ambulance rushed to the street in Camden, but missed the birth by a minute.

Luckily, officers had arrived five minutes before the birth and were on hand to help Weihong’s newborn into the world.

A Scotland Yard spokesman said: “The really hard work was done by mum, Weihong Yu, while PC Burch, PC Williams and PC King assisted with the delivery prior to the arrival of an ambulance.

“The officers, from the Met’s Central North Command Unit, reached Weihong in Kentish Town Road at 9.27pm on Sunday, September 23.

“She gave birth at 9.32pm, and London Ambulance Service were on the scene just a minute later.”

Mum and her as yet unnamed baby daughter are doing well in hospital.

Inspector Jason Stewart said: “Response team officers work hard around the clock to keep Londoners safe – they have to be ready for anything.

“It’s great that they were able to use their first aid, medical and people skills for such a happy occasion and assist a woman giving birth.

“She called police and London Ambulance Service after going into labour in the street.

“Our officers were on hand to help and I’m very proud of their role in comforting the mother and helping this new baby girl arrive.”
