Arsenal legend Perry Groves believes Arsene Wenger was ten years ahead of his time when he came into management, and has been more revolutionary for football than Pep Guardiola.

Perry was the first signing of George Graham at Arsenal, where he went on to play over 150 games and win four major trophies over a six-year spell.

During an extensive interview with bookmaker sportingbet, he has given his verdict on the Arsenal manager and ran the rule over a host of names tipped to replace him.

“Luis Enrique would be the dream managerial candidate,” he said.

“He has the winning mentality and trophies to attract the world class players Arsenal need, and he has the track record of managing big players with big egos”.

Although Diego Simeone has been tipped by many to replace Wenger, for Perry that would be a step back.

With a management style that is reminiscent of George Graham, his teams are built on defence rather than attack, which would come as a shock to the system to a club built around its attacking flare over the last two decades.

Other names that were quickly slammed down by the former Arsenal man include Thomas Tuchel, Patrick Vieria and Thierry Henry, who “should be nowhere near the Arsenal managerial hot seat” Perry says.

“There’s no room for sentimentality in football and neither have shown they would even be able to do a good job in the Championship”, he added, saying Champions League success will be a must for the Frenchman’s replacement.
