Research conducted ahead of the last leadership contest showed they largely believe in the death penalty and are against gay marriage.
It comes as the Tories lost two by-elections on the same day for the first time in more than 30 years. The last time was in November 1991.
It comes amid allegations of an electoral pact struck by the Lib Dems and Labour in the local contests.
