Donald Trump’s press secretary has defended the President’s choice to use unverified hate Tweets on his social media profile, saying “whether it’s a real video, the threat is real”.

Trump tweeted a succession of Islamaphobic videos from the Deputy Leader of Britain First today – a move that has already being condemned by World leaders.

But Press Secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders maintained that the videos did not need to be verified, claiming the media was focusing on “the wrong thing”.

“I’m not talking about the nature of the video,” she said. “…The threat is real, what the President is talking about – the need for national security and military spending – those are very real things, there’s nothing fake about that.”

Jayda Fransen – who was found guilty of religiously aggravated harassment in November of 2016 – had three videos retweeted by the President, one of which shows an “Islamist mob” pushing a teenage boy off the roof and “beating him to death” and another showing a “Muslim migrant” beating up Dutch boy on crutches.

The videos have not been independently verified. In a least one incident, local media and police never identified the alleged attack as Muslim.

Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run by a handful of billionaires, most of whom reside overseas and all of them have strong political allegiances and financial motivations.

Our mission is to hold the powerful to account. It is vital that free media is allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, wrongdoing and abuse of power. But we can't do it without you.
