A Belgian ex-pat called Mario Van Poppel bought the domain to voteleave.co.uk, voteleave.org, voteleave.com and voteleave.net and redirected them all to Rick Astley’s huge 1987 hit “Never Gonna Give You Up.
Visit any of these domains and you will hear the lyrics and see the great man in action. The famous words “Never gonna give you up, never gonna let you down,’ are probably more apt for the Stay campaign, but there you go.
Van Poppel claims at least 50k were redirected to the song within the first three days of the domains going live. He said he decided to do the prank because as a Belgian living in London, he can’t vote, but it will affect him and others in his position.
A “rickroll” is an internet term for tricking someone into watching his 80s hit. Why do they do it? I have no idea. But click here and have a go, go on! voteleave.com
Since you are here
Since you are here, we wanted to ask for your help.
Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run by a handful of billionaires, most of whom reside overseas and all of them have strong political allegiances and financial motivations.
Our mission is to hold the powerful to account. It is vital that free media is allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, wrongdoing and abuse of power. But we can't do it without you.
