Donald Trump has said the UK would be “better off without” the European Union in a typically candid interview with Fox News.

He said it is his “feeling” that the UK should vote to sever ties with the EU in its 23 June referendum because the union has failed to handle the migration crisis, which has been a “horrible thing for Europe”.

His comments come just weeks after Barak Obama visited to the UK to support the remain campaign. The President said Britain would go to “the back of the queue” for trade deals with the US if it left the EU and it could take years to hammer down a new agreement.

In stark contrast, Trump said he wanted Britain to make its “own decision”. He said: “I would say [the UK] are better off without [the EU], personally, but I’m not making that as a recommendation, just my feeling.

“I know Great Britain very well, I know the country very well, I have a lot of investments there.”

Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run by a handful of billionaires, most of whom reside overseas and all of them have strong political allegiances and financial motivations.

Our mission is to hold the powerful to account. It is vital that free media is allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, wrongdoing and abuse of power. But we can't do it without you.
