Stephen Fry has announced that he has prostate cancer in a video posted on his site.

The celebrated comedian, actor, writer and presenter posted a video entitled “something rather mischievous” online, explaining that doctors discovered the tumour during a routine check-up.

Fry, who appears upbeat in the video, said he had a gleason score score of eight, which is high enough to warrant some form of treatment.

He had an operation in the first week of January to remove his prostate and has recovered well.

Since you are here

Since you are here, we wanted to ask for your help.

Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run by a handful of billionaires, most of whom reside overseas and all of them have strong political allegiances and financial motivations.

Our mission is to hold the powerful to account. It is vital that free media is allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, wrongdoing and abuse of power. But we can't do it without you.
