David Lammy, the MP for Tottenham, has pleaded for Brexit to not take place.

His concerns have been raised as 1.8 million people have signed a petition demanding a new EU referendum. The website crashed as so many people tried to submit their petitions.

On Saturday morning, it was being signed by more than 100,000 people an hour.

Only 100,000 signatures are required to trigger a debate on the subject in Parliament. Lammy hopes this debate could persuade other MPs that the result does not have to mean a withdrawal from the EU, as it is not legally binding.

He Tweeted: “Wake up. We do not have to do this. We can stop this madness through a vote in Parliament.

“Our sovereign Parliament needs to vote on whether we should exit the EU.

Since you are here, we wanted to ask for your help.

Journalism in Britain is under threat. The government is becoming increasingly authoritarian and our media is run by a handful of billionaires, most of whom reside overseas and all of them have strong political allegiances and financial motivations.

Our mission is to hold the powerful to account. It is vital that free media is allowed to exist to expose hypocrisy, corruption, wrongdoing and abuse of power. But we can't do it without you.
