David Lammy, the MP for Tottenham, has pleaded for Brexit to not take place.

His concerns have been raised as 1.8 million people have signed a petition demanding a new EU referendum. The website crashed as so many people tried to submit their petitions.

On Saturday morning, it was being signed by more than 100,000 people an hour.

Only 100,000 signatures are required to trigger a debate on the subject in Parliament. Lammy hopes this debate could persuade other MPs that the result does not have to mean a withdrawal from the EU, as it is not legally binding.

He Tweeted: “Wake up. We do not have to do this. We can stop this madness through a vote in Parliament.

“Our sovereign Parliament needs to vote on whether we should exit the EU.

“The referendum was an advisory, non-binding referendum.”

Wake up. We do not have to do this. We can stop this madness through a vote in Parliament. My statement below pic.twitter.com/V8f9Yo1TZd
